All you need to know about the RAM 1500 e-torque system

If you are in the process of shopping for a 2020 RAM 1500, you’ve probably heard of the eTorque mild hybrid system, specific to this range of trucks. Standard on models with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 and optional on the 5.7L HEMI V8, this RAM technology provides additional launch torque (90–130 lb-ft) under certain driving conditions. Here are all the advantages of this "RAM 1500 Hybrid" in detail before you test drive it at Bessette Granby Chrysler, your Chrysler dealer of choice close to Cowansville and St-Jean!

As an alternator replacement, this system includes a 48-volt power pack, paired with a motor generator and a system control unit. This system does not waste any space, as the compact-sized battery is located behind the rear seats. To better understand how the RAM 1500 eTorque works, here it is in 6 driving conditions.

  1. AutoStop:

As its name indicates, this is an automatic start/stop system, which switches off the engine when the vehicle is stationary and restarts it when the driver is ready to resume driving, as we will see in point 2.

  1. E-Roll Assist:

When the driver starts to lift his or her foot from the brake pedal, the eTorque system gets the gas engine spinning again almost instantly and seamlessly. You will hence get an additional 90 lb-ft of launch torque with the V6 engine and 130 lb-ft with the V8, to ensure a more efficient "takeoff".

  1. Acceleration (upshifting):

The engine lowers its rpm very slightly before setting up to the higher gear. When this happens, the eTorque system turns on and recovers the energy to recharge its battery. Shifting gears is then smoother.

  1. Cruising Speeds:

By reducing parasitic drag and maximizing the fuel efficiency achieved by, among other things, the cylinder deactivation system.

  1. Deceleration (downshifting):

As soon as the system detects that the RAM 1500 is coasting, it cuts off the fuel supply and recovers the energy to recharge its battery.

  1. Regenerative Braking:

Here you will be entitled to 3 levels of energy recovery: eTorque if the braking system does not intervene, pure braking friction without eTorque (if you drive at 16 km/h or less) or a mixture of the 2 previous ones, if the situation arises.

The 2020 RAM 1500 is the only truck in the industry to offer the eTorque system, which gives it a distinct advantage over the competition! To find out more about the eTorque system or to test drive one of our 2020 RAM 1500 trucks, come and see us at Bessette Granby Chrysler, near Cowansville and St-Jean!
